Between you all you have managed to give me back ‘quality of life!’
Having already had a hip replacement a few years ago I underwent two total knee replacements in 2011. One in March and the other in September.
I suffered from osteoarthritis for many years & was not able to do the things that many of us take for granted like getting up from a chair, climbing or descending a flight of stairs or even a short walk. I found these activities extremely embarrassing because I was unable to do them without terrible pain. It interfered with my life at work & socially. My colleagues & friends put up with a lot and ‘ran’ around after me but they did so with the utmost patience. Now it’s my turn to return the favour!
To be able to go for a long walk and not have to worry about the rough uneven ground, a flight of steps or even have to walk sideways downhill now brings a big smile to my face. I can once again take up cycling without having to stop after five minutes and can even get use out of the walking boots that Santa brought me!!
Many thanks & Kind regards

Hi Mr Patko I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for sorting out my knee I got a bit confused last night when you asked me what percentage I thought my knee was healing I should have thanked you with a warm heart because my leg is 100% sir and its all down to your surgical skill and your care and your hospital staff,s care and attention to all the small details as well as the operation its self as I have said with out you I would be in tremendous pain once again I want to express a really big thank you and to and all of your staff involved with my case from the receptionist to the nurses and most of all to you a very big thank you
Many thanks and have a great Christmas and a very happy new year too you all
The pain in my hip before the operation prevented me from sleeping, sitting for any length of time, walking any distance (especially over rough surfaces). I managed only 9 holes of golf with pain killers, but a hilly course was a problem.
I now actively play 18 holes of golf 2 or 3 times a week and I have managed to acquire several prizes! The outcome is that I am completely mobile and free from pain and, to say the least, delighted with the results!
To Mr Patko and his Surgical Team
I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to you and all your team for my hip replacement surgery which you carried out on 19 April 2011.
Before the hip replacement the pain in my left knee and thigh, lack of sleep and reduced mobility was seriously affecting my life style. I found it increasingly difficult to carry out my farming activities and equestrian pursuits.
Since the hip replacement surgery the PAIN HAS GONE from my knee / thigh area, I can walk well and have even starting riding our horses again. My hopes and aspirations before surgery were to be free of pain and to walk and work easily, I can now do that and the ‘icing on the cake’, I can ride again – wonderful.
I have low level pain in my left lower back lumbar region particularly when I walk with purpose and briskly but this is really a triviality. I am receiving treatment from the NHS physiotherapist to ease/resolve this minor problem. The Physio suggests this discomfort may be caused by the wasting of the muscles in my lower back when pre surgery I was allowing the right side muscles to do all the work to take the pain away from the left hip / thigh area so I can carry out the prescribed exercises every day.
The Doctors, Nurses and Physiotherapists on Ward 34 BDGH were professional, caring, efficient and friendly so if you could thank them for me I would be most grateful
Thank you Mr Patko
Best wishes to you and your team
Over the last 20 years the osteoarthritis in my right knee has been getting worse, year on year. I thought my ability to ski and
take part in sporting activities was coming to an end. However, following my Total Knee Replacement carried out by Mr Patko
at Barnsley Hospital, I now look forward to many more years of pain free activity.
The photos were taken just 11 and a half weeks after my surgery and prove the total success of the TKR.
Thank you Mr Patko!
